ArmenianWe started our work in Armenia with what we knew best: handmade carpets.
In 1993, after the fall of the Soviet Union, Armenia’s factories were shut down, its borders were closed, and it had no electricity. But it had sheep—Caucasus Mountain sheep with long, lustrous wool. And it had a tradition of carpet-weaving that stretched back to time beyond memory. Using yarn that has been sheared, carded, spun, and dyed by hand from Armenian wool, Tufenkian started a handmade carpet industry. We took these traditional, organic crafts and used them to weave modern designs. The result is richly textured, subtly shaded rugs that build spectacular modern interiors |
